Memorize the following spelling rules.

1. The letter ы never occurs as the first letter in the word, therefore it is never capitalized.

2. After consonants г, к, ж, ш only и is spelled (never ы).

3. We pronounce и as [ы] after letters ж, ш: жир [жыр], машина [машына].

4. After ц letters е and и are spelled but vowels э and ы are pronounced: цирк [цырк], цент [цэнт].
