 Грамматика                                     Dative Case of Noun Modifiers

1. The Dative Case of Adjectives
If a noun is used in the Dative case, the adjective that modifies that noun must also be in the Dative case. The Dative singular ending for adjectives that modify masculine and neuter nouns is -ому (-ему)

Listen and repeat:

1. Я пишу письмо моему хорошему русскому другу.

1. I am writing a letter to my good Russian friend .

The Dative singular ending for adjectives that modify feminine nouns is -ой (-ей).
Listen and repeat:

2. Я купила моей хорошей русской подруге книгу.

2. I bought my good Russian friend a book.

The Dative plural ending for adjectives that modify plural nouns is -ым (-им)

Listen and repeat:

3. Он подарил новым русским студентам словари.

3. He gave new Russian students dictionaries.

Notes
  • Remember that word order is not fixed in Russian sentences. The indirect object with its modifiers can stay
  • - right after verb:

      Я купила моей хорошей русской подруге книгу;

                                      Indirect Object                                 Direct Object

      Он подарил новым русским студентам словари.

                                      Indirect Object                                 Direct Object

    - or after the direct object:

      Я пишу письмо моему хорошему русскому другу.

                        Direct Object                               Indirect Object

  • The Dative Case is also used to designate the indirect object of certain intransitive verbs (i.e. verbs which do not take a direct object) and for objects of some prepositions. These uses will be discussed latter on.
2. The Dative Case of Adjectives (Endings Summary)
The Dative case of adjectives  is formed from the Nominative case. Memorize the Dative Case endings for adjectives:

 Hard variant

 Nominative -> Dative

Soft variant

Nominative -> Dative

 Masculine and Neuter

 новый -> новому

синий -> синему

  хороший -> хорошему

 новое -> новому

синее -> синему

хорошее -> хорошему

 Feminine

 новая -> новой синяя -> синей

хорошая -> хорошей

 Plural

 новые -> новым синие -> синим
  хорошие -> хорошим

 Dative case adjectival endings:      -ому (-ему); -ой (-ей); -ым (-им)

3. The Dative Case of Possessive and Demonstrative Pronouns
Memorize the Dative case of possessive pronouns (мой, твой, наш. ваш), demonstrative pronouns (этот, тот) and the question word чей:
 Nominative: Чей?  Dative: Чьему?
 Masculine and Neuter
 этот, тот

  Notes
  • The Dative case endings for possessive and demonstrative pronouns are the same as adjectives endings. The only exception is the Dative plural of тот : те -> тем.
  • Note that the stress in the мой, твой, тот pronouns falls on the final syllable of the ending in the Dative: моему, твоему, тому. The pronouns наш, ваш, этот have the stress on the stem: нашему, вашему, этому.
Listen and repeat. Pay attention to the Dative case endings.
