 Лексика                                                                Subjects at School

Word Formation: Subject - Specialist - Department

You can use vocabulary and phrases offered in this topic to talk about courses you are taking at university/school, your major/specialty, your faculty/department.

Most Russian words for subjects at university/school and for student's major are nouns.

Most Russian words for faculties (divisions, departments) are adjectives.

You will hear three different words in each sound file.

Example: история - историк - исторический факультет

The first word in line история means history as a subject of study, the second one историк means historian - specialist in this field, the third one исторический факультет means faculty of history.

Study the list of words below.

Notes

  • Suffix -ическ- is usually used to form adjectives from nouns with the meaning of a field of knowledge. To form most of such adjectives remove the letters -ия (история) or -ика (физика) from the noun and add -ическ-ий to that noun (-ий - masculine adjective ending).
    история - исторический факультет
    физика - физический факультет
  •

  • Exceptions (adjectives formed with the suffix -ск- instead of expected -ическ-):
  • медицина - медицинский

    философия - философский

Note two different sentence structures to say what courses you are taking and where (in what faculty/department) you study. Listen and repeat:

1. Я изучаю историю.

I study history (I'm taking history).

2. Я учусь на историческом факультете.

I am (I study) in the history department.

 Reading and writing: I study...

1. Use the texts below as the model for you own story. Read these texts aloud at least three times.

А.     Здравствуйте! Меня зовут Аня. Я живу в Москве и учусь в университете на педагогическом факультете. Я изучаю педагогику, психологию, историю, английский язык и русскую литературу.

Б.      Здравстуйте! Меня зовут Игорь. Я живу в Санут-Петербурге и учусь в университете на медицинском факультете. Я изучаю медицину, математику, химию, биологию, *а также экономику и латинский язык.

* а также - and also

2. Make up your own story. Tell what is your name, where you live and study, what courses you are taking.

3. Write down your story on paper or type it on your computer, then read it aloud at least three times.

4. Keep your story for future reference.

 Speaking:  I study...

Memorize your story and retell it without looking at the paper or computer.
